Summary

Description

The monument comprises the remains of a prehistoric crannog surviving as a stone cairn on intertidal mudflats. The monument is a low cairn of stones which is fully submerged at high tide. The cairn incorporates timbers which appear to have formed a framework or foundations and which have been dated to the later prehistoric period.

On the surface of the cairn there are two raised areas which may have been used for wildfowling in the recent past. Built into the cairn and partly buried within the stones are the remains of several wattle-lined pits of uncertain function.

The area to be scheduled encompasses the crannog and an area around it in which traces of associated materials may be expected to survive. It is circular in shape and 65m in diameter as marked in red on the accompanying map.

Statement of National Importance

The monument is of national importance because of its potential to contribute to an understanding of prehistoric life. The preservation of the timberwork indicates that the waterlogged nature of the site has preserved the organic remains of the crannog; these organic remains relate to the domestic life and diet of the people who built and used the crannog.

We make recommendations to the Scottish Government about historic marine protected areas, and the Scottish Ministers decide whether to designate.

Scheduling is the process that identifies, designates and provides statutory protection for monuments and archaeological sites of national importance as set out in the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979.

We schedule sites and monuments that are found to be of national importance using the selection guidance published in Designation Policy and Selection Guidance (2019)
