Description
The monument comprises the remains of a farmstead and field system of the period before the agricultural improvements. There are the remains of a subdivided rectangular house and several associated enclosures and rectangular fields. To the E of the long house are the remains of a Neolithic chambered cairn; to the N and W of the cairn are 14 rock outcrops bearing cup marks. The area to be scheduled measures 330m E-W by 175m N-S, to include the farmstead and field system, the chambered cairn and the cup marked rocks, and an area around them in which traces of activities associated with their use will survive, as marked in red on he attached map.
Statement of National Importance
The monument is of national importance as a well preserved farmstead and field system which has the potential to enhance considerably our understanding of pre-improvement settlement and agriculture. The site is of particular interest because of the survival of much earlier remains; the cairn and the cupmarks have the potential to increase our knowledge of prehistoric burial and ceremonial practices.
