Summary

Description

The monument consists of a chambered cairn measuring approximately 36m NE/SW by 22m NW/SE; despite robbing a considerable amount of cairn material survives in places. The chamber is rectangular and of Orkney Cromarty type; 3m in front of the portal stones is a large flat slab beneath which a vertical slab probably belonging to the passage can be seen.

The area proposed for scheduling includes ground in which will survive traces of activities associated with the construction and use of the cairn; it is bounded on the W and S by arable land and on the E by, but excluding, a fence and forestry plantation and measures 55m NE/SW by 35m NW/SE as delineated in red on the attached map.

Statement of National Importance

The monument is of national importance because it is a good example of an Orkney/Cromarty chambered cairn with a well preserved burial chamber. It is of further importance for the pollen preserved in its underlying old ground surface which will allow an understanding of the vegetation and farming practices of the period immediately preceding its construction.
