Summary

Description

The site consists of the remains of a horseshoe shaped setting of standing stones on open moorland. Six stones form the remaining part of this stone setting. These stones are set in the form of an elongated horseshoe, with its open end to the SW. The stones vary from 0.2m to 2.2m in height. The area to be scheduled measures 155m SW-NE by a maximum of 75m NW- SE, to include the stones of the stone setting and an area around in which traces of activities associated with the construction and use of the monument may survive

Statement of National Importance

This monument is of national importance for its potential contribution to an understanding of prehistoric ritual and ceremonial behaviour. The stone setting is one of a rare class of horseshoe shaped settings of stones. These stone settings are thought to be connected with the tradition of stone circle building.

Historic Environment Scotland is responsible for designating sites and places at the national level. These designations are Scheduled monuments, Listed buildings, Inventory of gardens and designed landscapes and Inventory of historic battlefields.

We make recommendations to the Scottish Government about historic marine protected areas, and the Scottish Ministers decide whether to designate.
