Summary

Description

17th century with later additions and alterations. 2 storey, 4 bay, T plan farmhouse. Harled and cement rendered and lined.

SW (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: asymmetrical; lean to porch addition to ground of penultimate bay to left, with harled base and timber framed windows; glazed door; flanked by single windows; regular fenestration to 3 bays of 1st floor. Replacement window to ground of bay to right; 1st floor blank. Outbuilding at right angles to house to outer right; random rubble with tooled long and short quoins; brick gable to SW; piended slate roof. 20th century concrete walled dog pen to right of outbuilding.

SE ELEVATION: obscured by outbuilding.

NE ELEVATION: asymmetrical, 4 bay; penultimate bay to right and central bay advanced; blind windows to each bay of ground; blind window to right of 1st floor; window to left of 1st floor; 2 windows to ground and 2 blind window to 1st floor of left return; window to ground on right, with window above and blind window to right of 1st floor of right return; harled lean to porch to re entrant angle to right with single window to NE and boarded timber door to right return; slate roof. Regular fenestration to ground and 1st floor of harled bay to outer right. Window to 1st floor of penultimate bay to left. Replacement window to ground of left; window to 1st floor. Outbuilding to outer left (see above).

NW ELEVATION: asymmetrical, harled; single window to right of ground floor.

Predominantly 12 pane replacement timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roof with lead ridge; stone skews. Coped gablehead stacks with octagonal cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1997.

BOUNDARY WALL AND GATEPIERS: random rubble boundary wall with rubble coping; tooled, coped stone gatepiers with pyramidal caps.

Statement of Special Interest

According to the 1st Edition OS Map Wester Middleton was originally called Easter Middleton, however in all the subsequent editions it is referred to as Wester Middleton. Easter and Wester Middleton farms were the principal farms on the Middleton estate. Wester Middleton was formerly one of the principal inns in Borthwick parish, which, according to the NSA were "well kept, and have had no perceptible bad effects upon the morals of the people" (p189-190). Middleton Inn was on the old road from Edinburgh to Galashiels being an important coach stage, and perhaps also an occasional meeting place of Lord Cockburn and Scott. The farmhouse has been much altered, originally having an impressive ingleneuk to the south-west elevation (see NMRS Photographs).
