Description

Mansion; Hesketh, London, architect, 1863, with extensive additions by T. MacVicar Anderson, 1891. Large, Long Baronial mansion, with east entrance front and west facing garden elevation. All coursed, bullfaced rubble with tooled (some contrasting) ashlar dressings. Mainly 2 storeys and attic; large square tower of 4 storeys over basement at NE with octagonal angle stair turret rising above crenellated wallhead. Further, less dominant square tower incorporated in asymmetrical composition at SE, fronted by principal entrance and porte cochere with groined ceiling initialled A (for Abinger). Further hoodmoulded and pointed-headed entrance in SE re-entrant angle of NE tower. Irregular

fenestration including 1 x 5 and 1 x 4 light 2-storey canted windows with crowstepped gables above. Long, irregular west front incorporating canted windows, towers, crowstepped gables and crenellations. Mainly 2-pane glazing; corniced ridge stacks; slate roofs.

Interior: ornate 1891 entrance hall with richly decorated plaster ceiling with centre picture of cherubs and surrounding detailing including coats of arms and coronetted "A". Wide staircase with turned wooden barley sugar balusters; ornate inlaid marble chimney piece in drawing room inserted during 1970's. Stables and walled garden. 1863

presumably Hesketh with later wing (right) probably of T. MacVicar Anderson, 1891. Symmetrical north facing stable and carriage house block square centre 2-storey, 3-bay range (now dwelling) with single storey and loft, 3 bay wings set slightly back. All coursed, bull-faced rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. Round-headed entrance with recessed door; further centre round-headed carriage entrance to right block with diminutive round-headed loft window above. Wide modern

garage doorway slapped in left hand block. Round-head windows with 2-pane glazing; crenellated wallhead to complete range, with dummy angle turrets to centre block. Shallow piended slate roofs.

Walled garden: 1863; extensive coped rubble walled garden extends at rear (south) of stable range.

Statement of Special Interest

(Old) Inverlochy Castle is a Guardianship Monument to SW. (New) Inverlochy Castle a mansion built by 1st Lord Abinger, 1863-91. Queen Victoria stayed there in 1873.
