Summary

Description

Dated 1760. Stone shaft and multiple dial sundial situated on octagonal stepped plinth with ball finial on top, and is intervisible with Arthurstone House (see separate listing). Square base with bas relief figures to each face; round shaft with bas relief Corinthian columns and foliate decoration. 4 dials with metal gnomons and inscribed markings.

Statement of Special Interest

This is a fine example of an 18th century dial sundial, with good decorative detailing, each carved face with different numbers and markings. The mathematics of sundials was of particular interest to the Scots in the 17th and 18th century and number of very elaborate designs were created. Remaining intact sundials are becoming increasingly rare. The sundial was repaired in 2007 and some new gnomons were added.

It is not known if this sundial was designed specifically for Arthurstone Estate. Many country houses placed sundials within their designed landscapes as important elements of the garden. This one is situated at the front of Arthurstone House and continues the tradition of linking the house with this mathematical feature.

Arthurstone Estate was originally owned by the Cistercian Abbey at Coupar Angus. After the Reformation, it was placed into private ownership. The present house (see separate listing) has a late 18th century core, with most of the building dating from the 19th century. There is also a walled garden and doocot to the east (see separate listings). In the 20th century, the house spent some time as a private school for girls and was converted into private apartments circa 2005. The walled garden was also developed with private housing at the same time.
