Description

Dated 1906. Pair of intervisible City Works drainage buildings with Classical detailing situated on Mearns Quay and Torry Quay on opposite sides of harbour at entrance to the River Dee. Polished grey granite ashlar. Inscribed 'City of Aberdeen Main Drainage Works' above door.

FURTHER DESCRIPTION: Torry Quay Drainage Terminal: single storey, octagonal plan sewage pump house. Leaded dome atop deep recessed timber ventilation course with segmental-arched louvred vents. Round-arched insets to N, S and E elevations, each with pair of narrow round-arched openings. Mearns Quay Valve House: Single storey rectangular-plan with shouldered pedimented gables. Moulded cill course, semicircular openings, round-arch moulded eaves course. Segmental-arch pedimented doorpiece to W elevation; timber paneled door with arcaded moulding to upper part.

Grey slate to valve house with segmental-arched ridge vent. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

Statement of Special Interest

Constructed in 1906 as part of improvements to the city drainage system, this diminutive pair of granite ashlar buildings are situated on separate quays. They are intervisible and are of some quality with their fine detailing and cast-iron rainwater goods. Functional buildings of this type with such attention to detail are rare and they add significantly to the built environment of the harbour.
