Description

Mid 19th century with small 20th century extensions. 2-storey, 3-bay, rectangular-plan house with single storey wing to rear and sympathetic extensions. Harled with painted margins and stone cills. Deep base course.

SE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: symmetrical. Centre bay at ground with swept roof over rustic porch leading to modern door with original small-pane margined fanlight; windows in flanking bays and regular fenestration to 1st floor. Later single storey bay wrapping around angle at outer left comprising conservatory with harled base and timber-transomed bipartites canted to French window with margined glazing at centre.

SW ELEVATION: broad gabled elevation with window to outer left at 1st floor, conservatory at right ground with 3 continuous transomed bipartites and piended roof, small lean-to projecting in re-entrant angle to left.

NW (REAR) ELEVATION: single storey, T-plan offices projecting from centre of asymmetrically fenestrated elevation with large stair window to centre and 3 slate-hung flat-roofed dormer windows above.

NE ELEVATION: gabled elevation with small casement windows to left at each floor and further window to right at 1st floor; 3 continuous timber-transomed bipartites to front and left return of piend-roofed extension projecting at centre ground.

Largely 12-pane glazing pattern to timber sash and case windows, leaded multi-pane glazing to stair window, top-lights of conservatory to SW and timber multi-pane glazing to NE extension. Grey slates. Cavetto-coped harled stacks with cans. Overhanging eaves at gable ends.

INTERIOR: some decorative plasterwork cornicing, panelled shutters and brass sash lifts; encaustic-tiled hall floor, winding stair with decorative cast-iron railings; timber fire surround with cast-iron grate and tiled cheeks, and wall-cupboard with decoratively-astragalled glazing to ground left at SE.

BOUNDARY WALLS: rubble boundary walls.

Statement of Special Interest

Situated close to the entrance to Keathbank (formerly Keithbank) Mill, with an entrance (now unused) at Bonnington Road, Glenshieling was formerly known as 'Keith Park'.
