Description

1899. 2-storey and attic row of terraced 2-bay houses with canted bays with crowstepped gables. Coursed polished sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. Base course; band course between ground and 1st floors, corniced at canted bays; cornice at roofline at bay to right and, beneath crenellated parapet, to canted bay at left; stepped skews; alternate segmental and triangular pediments to dormers at right of gables. Margins to 1st floor window, bay at right (Nos 19 to 25 only).

W (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: doorpiece to bay to right at ground; panelled pedestals to nook-shafts supporting moulded, keystoned round-arched opening; recessed panels to spandrels; flanking fluted pilasters, with raised rectangular moulding to capitals, supporting cornice; panelled timber entrance door, flanked by narrow multi-paned light, with semicircular fanlight (some with astragals); window at 1st floor above; dormer to attic; 2-storey canted bay at left, with light to each face; bipartite window to gable, above parapet of canted bay.

2-pane timber sash and case glazing (4-pane to dormers), with occasional multi-paned upper sashes; grey slate roof; coped, coursed, polished sandstone ashlar mutual and gablehead stacks (rendered between Nos 23 and 25) with tall cylindrical cans; cast-iron rainwater goods.

NW (SIDE) ELEVATION: 2-bay; base course; band courses between ground floor and 1st floor and between 1st and 2nd floors; cornice and balustrade with ball finials at either end to left of gablehead stack. 2-storey canted bay with crenellated parapet at bay to left; bipartite window above; centred window at attic level; elaborate plaque inscribed '1899' set to right at 1st floor.

BOUNDARY WALLS: low, coped, coursed sandstone rubble boundary walls to street.

Statement of Special Interest

B-Group with 1-9 (odd nos) Murrayfield Avenue and 2-60 (even nos) Murrayfield Avenue. Impressive Baronial houses lining wide avenue. Matched by similar block lower down the same side, Nos 1-9 (listed separately), and longer terrace opposite, Nos 2-60 (listed separately). Nos 23 and 25 are by the hand of J Bryan Nisbet of 130 George Street; the architect of the remaining buildings are not specified on the slightly later plans.
