Summary

Description

J Cowan, 1900. 3-storey, 5-bay, rectangular-plan, M-gabled, late Greek Revival, Masonic Lodge. Giant order pilasters to outer left bay, with low relief rose-en-soleil device. Red ashlar sandstone to front, brick to sides and rear. Dividing bands between floors.

SE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: broad, steel-shuttered entrance to outer left bay; flanking blocked narrow openings, lugged cavetto moulding; block pediment above with framed shield device to centre. Flanking giant order pilasters to upper storey; bipartite window above with stone mullion; single architraved window to 1st floor; rose-en-soleil device to 2nd floor beneath bipartite window; pediment breaking eaves above, framed panels to plinths bearing Masonic devices, capitals breaking eaves. Regular fenestration to bays to right; door to centre ground floor, blocked windows to flanking; continuous plinth to 2nd storey supporting pilastered bipartite windows with stone mullions, projecting corbels above; bipartite windows to 3rd storey, piers rising to coped wallhead stacks.

NW (REAR) ELEVATION: irregular fenestration, cast-iron emergency staircase.

SW (SIDE) ELEVATION: harled gable end.

NE (SIDE) ELEVATION: harled gable end.

Boarded or missing panes to steel window frames. Grey slates, lead flashing. Coped gable end stacks. Cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: galleried meeting hall to 1st floor, not seen 2001.

Statement of Special Interest

JL Cowan, with offices at 136 Wellington Gardens, was one of many Glasgow architects emulating the Greek Revival style of Alexander Thomson. He is probably the same James Lynburn Cowan (1821-1905) responsible for Glasgow Masonic Halls, 98 west Regent Street, 1895. These dates would put the Motherwell Masonic Halls at the end of his career and of the same generation as Thomson.
