Summary

Description

Later 19th century with circa 1880 conservatory addition, James Boyd of Paisley. 2-storey classically detailed, asymmetrical double villa on corner site with bowed conservatory to side (of No 21). Villa in squared and snecked sandstone with painted ashlar dressings. 1st floor cill course. Segmentally carved lintels to principal windows, those at ground corniced, those at 1st floor with panelled aprons.

E ELEVATION (No 19): 3-bay with columned doorpiece to centre, with architrave and entablature, rectangular fanlight to doorway, single window above: bipartite windows to left and canted full-height window to right.

N ELEVATION: 5-bay with 3-bays to right detailed as above except doorpiece (to No 21) with square pillars to unpainted ashlar doorpiece with round-arched lights (decorative leaded glazing) on return. 2 bays to left with single windows to outer left and small blank panels to right, to each floor.

S ELEVATION: single storey service wing to centre.

W ELEVATION (No 21): see conservatory, below.

Plate glass windows in timber sash and case windows. Modillioned eaves. Grey slate piend and platform roof. Painted stone stacks to wallhead.

CONSERVATORY:

Elongated D-plan conservatory to near centre of W elevation, with ashlar base course, rendered apron, 15-light timber glass house above (door in peumtimate light to S), each light with pivoting 2-pane lower sections and decorative leaded glazing above with coloured reed-effect margin-panes. Curved pavilion-style roof with ventilating clerestory at ridge with pivoting panes, decorative brattishing and finial.

INTERIOR: entered from drawing room. Roof supported on corniced, tapering timber column with applied reeding and decorative cast-iron brackets. Latticed timber apron to slatted timber shelves lining perimiter.

Statement of Special Interest

The listing relates specifically to the special architectural and historic interest of the conservatory, a particularly ornate example for a speculative villa, making a significant contribution to the overall impact of the property. Its survival is exceptional, and indicates the wealth and lifestyle of residents in Pollokshields during its heyday.
