Description

1902. Village hall of freestyle design comprising 2-storey 3-bay symmetrical principal range to S with crenellated circular 2-storey entrance tower to E gable and large 5-bay hall extending N at rear (now with modern additions to E and W elevations). Harl-pointed rubble walls with stugged and droved yellow sandstone dressings and details over stugged squared and snecked sandstone battered base course. Long and short quoins to windows and framing elevations of principal range.

S (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: symmetrical, windows in each bay at ground, large attenuated Venetian window with continuous cill at 1st floor rising into wide gablehead breaking eaves.

W ELEVATION: symmetrical, regularly fenestrated, 2-bay gable end of principal range at right, 5-bay hall elevation extending to left with regularly-spaced windows, partially obscured by modern lean-to addition.

E ELEVATION: single window at 1st floor to left in gable end of principal range; stugged sandstone ashlar entrance tower projecting at right with modern half-glazed entrance door set into projecting doorpiece to S and narrow window centred above; window at intermediate height to E; crenellated parapet; flagpole mounted on concrete plinth between tower and modern addition obscuring hall elevation recessed at right.

Modern glazing throughout. Modern grey slate roof; ship weathervane surmounting square metal clock tower on slated plinth centring ridge of principal range. Corniced ashlar skew-copes to S gable, crowstepped skew-copes to E and W gables rising to 3-flue corniced gablehead stacks with octagonal cans.

RAILINGS AND GATEPIERS: cement-rendered and lined dwarf wall with triangular concrete cope surmounted by finialled cast-iron railings enclosing building to S and E; cement-rendered entrance gatepiers with pyramidal caps to SW and E.

Statement of Special Interest

The influence of the Art Nouveau and English Arts and Crafts styles is more evident on this building than most of its contemporaries in Lerwick, which are mainly influenced by the earlier Scots Baronial style.
