Summary

Description

Later 19th century with later additions and alterations. Symmetrical 2-storey, 3-bay plain classical style villa (former bank and manager's house) with single storey, single bay pavilion recessed to left; single storey pavilion advanced to right with single storey addition recessed to outer right. Squared and snecked tooled cream sandstone; sandstone ashlar dressings. Base course; raised cill course at 1st floor; overhanging timber bracketed eaves. Quoins; stugged long and short surrounds to stop-chamfered openings; sandstone mullions; flush cills.

N (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: corniced, flat-roofed porch projecting at centre with 2-leaf timber panelled door; plate glass fanlight. Bipartite windows at ground in bays flanking entrance; single windows in all bays at 1st floor. Blind elevation to single storey pavilion recessed to outer left. Single window in pavilion slightly advanced to right; single window in bay recessed to outer right.

E (SIDE) ELEVATION: blind elevation to main block; single storey projection off-set to left of centre.

S (REAR) ELEVATION: not seen 1998.

W (SIDE) ELEVATION: single storey projection to outer right; single window in bay recessed to outer left; main block set behind.

Predominantly 4-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Grey slate piend and platform roof to main block; grey slate piended roofs to flanking pavilions. Corniced sandstone wallhead stacks to E and W main block; various circular cans. Tall, corniced, square-plan stack to W pavilion; single circular can.

INTERIOR: not seen 1998.

BOUNDARY WALLS AND GATEPIERS: coped sandstone wall enclosing site to front. Square-plan, coursed sandstone gatepiers flanking vehicular entrance; pyramidal caps; gate missing.

Statement of Special Interest

A late but well-detailed, prominently sited house, which once housed the Royal Bank (see OS map).

Historic Environment Scotland is responsible for designating sites and places at the national level. These designations are Scheduled monuments, Listed buildings, Inventory of gardens and designed landscapes and Inventory of historic battlefields.

Listed building consent is required for changes to a listed building which affect its character as a building of special architectural or historic interest. The relevant planning authority is the point of contact for applications for listed building consent.
