Description
Circa 1890. Paired terrace of 2-storey and attic and 3-storey, 3-bay tenements with shops at ground. Sandstone ashlar to front, rubble and brick to side and rear. String course above ground floor, 1st and 2nd floor cill courses, eaves cornice. Curvilinear and Dutch dormers and wallhead gables. Chamfered margins. Basket arched openings at ground. Hoodmoulds to 1st floor segmental-arched windows (except oriels).
N E (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: 2-storey and attic 3-bay section to left; central doorway, rectangular fanlight with multi-pane glazing, 6-panel door. Bays flanking; 19th century shopfront at ground with central recessed doorway and flanking plate glass windows with low stall risers, that to left with multi-pane upper lights. Pilaster-mullioned bipartites at 1st floor centre; corbelled oriels flanking rising into piend-roofed canted dormers. Pilaster-mullioned wallhead dormer above centre with curvilinear gable and ornate corbelled, octagonal finial. 3-storey section to right; 19th century shopfronts at ground, 2 doorways with plain fanlights, glazed doors and flanking plate glass windows with low stall risers to left. Doorway off-set to right, rectangular fanlight, 6-panel door. Further shopfront to right with plate glass window and low stallriser to right and recessed doorway to left. 3-bay upper storeys; centre bay with window at 1st floor, ogee gabled window at 2nd floor with finial. Bay to left; stone-mullioned bipartite at 1st floor, pilaster-mullioned, ogee gabled window at 2nd floor with 3 dies and finial at apex. Bay to right; canted oriel window at 1st floor extending to 2nd floor with dormered roof.
NW ELEVATION: gable end of former internal wall, demolished building.
S E ELEVATION: adjoining George Hotel.
Timber sash and case windows, plate glass. Grey slate pitched roofs. Stone skews with corbelled and gabletted skewputts. Broad brick, corniced gablehead stacks and to centre on party wall. Decorative rainwater hoppers and gutter fixtures.
Statement of Special Interest
Fine and ornate stonework in a matching style to that of the George Hotel which terminates the terrace.
