Summary

Description

1835, with later additions and alterations. 2-storey (grouped 3-1), 4-bay asymmetrical school and school house with single storey wing to outer right and square-plan porch to rear, (W) elevation. Stugged ashlar sandstone with polished and droved ashlar dressings. Gables to 1st floor dormer windows. Stepped block to gable skews. Base course to E (principal) and N elevations. Chamfered reveals to windows.

E (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: 3-bay, triple dormer group to left: raised architraved doorpiece with gothick ancones supporting a cornice above; single window at 1st floor above. Window to each floor of bays to left and right. Single gabled bay to right: full-height bay slightly advanced; tripartite, pointed-arched window with segmental arch set in to centre; diamond-framed vent above; advanced, bracketed die to apex of gable.

N (PLAYGROUND) ELEVATION: single storey, 4-bay (grouped 2-2) with advanced 2-bay projection to right. Single window in each bay to left of centre; single window in each bay of advanced, gabled group to right of centre; diamond-framed vent above; gablehead stack; modern part- glazed door with narrow window to right in left return.

W ELEVATION: single storey, 2-bay. Full-height gable wall to right with tall tripartite window to centre; diamond-framed vent above. Single window in bay to left; square-plan porch to outer right of gable; panelled door with multi-pane geometric fanlight above.

Variety of window types; 24-pane timber sash and case, (some PVCu) tripartite timber mullioned with Y-tracery, 12-pane sash and case, 24-pane fixed, 16-pane fixed, 6-pane with top-hopper; grey slate roof; ridged ashlar coped skews with prominent skewputts to dormers; wallhead coped ashlar stacks to N and S elevations; coped ashlar stack to centre of roof.

BOUNDARY WALL: sandstone rubble with shaped rubble cope.

OUTBUILDING: single storey symmetrical garage. Ashlar sandstone with polished ashlar quoins. Opening to centre with piended grey slate roof; symmetrical square-plan wings to outer left and right; ashlar coped flat roof to wing to left; raised brick section (later) to wing to right with monopitch corrugated iron roof; painted wooden tie beam and braces.

Statement of Special Interest

Mitchell writes that in 1696 the establishment of a school in Cockpen was initiated. Subsequent years saw its various relocation but, by "1835 the present school premises were erected by the side of Parsonspool burn, and opened in May, 1836".

Listed building consent is required for changes to a listed building which affect its character as a building of special architectural or historic interest. The relevant planning authority is the point of contact for applications for listed building consent.
