Description

Late 18th - early 19th century. Short terrace of 7, 2-storey (possibly formerly single storey) pantiled houses. S elevations of Nos 4, 6 and 10 coursed over random rubble, No 4 cement render and No 10 dry dash; all random rubble to N. Raised stone margins. Eaves lintel course. Quoin strip to NW, droved quoins to SE and SW.

S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: No 14 with timber door to centre at ground, window in bay to left and small window to right, 2 windows to 1st floor. No 12 with 2 doors to centre, windows in flanking bays and 3 windows to 1st floor. No 10 with part-glazed timber door in bay to right, small window to centre and further window to left, 2 windows to 1st floor. No 12 with 2 boarded timber doors to right, window to left and 2 windows to 1st floor. No 4 with windows to outer bays at ground, forestair from right to 1st floor centre door and windows in flanking bays.

N (SCHOOL LANE) ELEVATION: variety of openings including large garage door to No 4. (See Notes).

E (ROSSLYN STREET) ELEVATION: largely blank with window to left of centre at 1st floor.

W ELEVATION: blank.

Timber sash and case windows to No 4 1st floor, and No 6; top-opening timber windows to No 14; unless stated otherwise all other openings blocked. Pantiles with slate eaves easing course to No 10, small section or corrugated iron to No 4. Coped ashlar stacks to Nos 6/10, 10/12 and 14; coped brick stacks to Nos 4 and 16/18; some clay cans. Ashlar coped skews with moulded skewputts to No 4; thackstanes.

Statement of Special Interest

The traditional and vernacular character of this terrace is enhanced by the irregularity of traditional pantiles. School Lane, to the rear of the cottages, boasts a fine cobbled surface.
