Description

Peter Whiston, 1969-72. Harled church with swept valley roof and internal gallery linked to harled presbytery and hall by single storey vestibule passage; tall brick base courses.

CHURCH:

N ELEVATION: single storey link to left. Tall entrance elevation with recessed 4-part arrangement of doors with dividing plain piers (2-leaf timber doors) supporting jettied upper stage with vast window to gallery (vertically paned, 6-part including louvred and pivot panes to lower section). Lean-to stair tower to outer right with tall strip window to N and forestair to door to W with tall window above; slender cross attached above at N breaking wallhead.

W ELEVATION: lop-sided V-roof evident in largely blank elevation with tall wallhead to left, dipping to right of centre and rising gently to outer right. Window to outer left at ground and door below valley of roof to right.

S ELEVATION: end wall of day chapel with 2 tall window strips flanking centre, otherwise blank.

Picot windows; coloured glass to day chapel. Copper clad roof with contrasting metal flashings.

INTERIOR: timber boarded walls and ceiling to church with encased beams dividing space into 3, under roof swept up over timber raked gallery to N. Altar on shallow dais area with ?apsed? gableheaded recess behind, flanked by gableheaded screen walls with 2-leaf doors, all borrowing light from day chapel through coloured glass panels at head. Day chapel with dramatic boarded roof and encased supporting beams, brick-lined walls.

PRESBYTERY: gabled, 2-storey, rectangular-plan house (approximately 4-bay x 3-bay) with large metal-framed windows to principal rooms and tall glazed stair bay flanking principal door by re-entrant angle to court (S elevation) formed with the link to church and hall. Rear elevation with forestair to secondary door. Narrow recessed window panel off-centre of broad gabled W elevation. Casement and pivot windows. Copper roof.
