Description

Dated 1905. 2-storey block on irregular site, comprised of shops at ground and residential accommodation above. Squared and snecked, bull-faced cream sandstone with red sandstone ashlar dressings; modern shop fronts at ground. Rounded arrises.

SW ELEVATION: 5-bay with 2 bays to left at oblique angle; outer bays at ground flanked red sandstone pilasters; billet moulded cornice to sandstone frieze above ground. 3 1st floor bays to centre and right comprised of 2 corniced windows breaking eaves in semi-circular gablehead at centre, with carved and pedimented date panel, ball finials flanking and fluted neck to corniced stack above; bipartite windows flanking, each breaking eaves in open pediments. 2 bays to left of centre with bipartite windows breaking eaves, 1 in semi-circular pediment, the outer window in open pediment as above.

SE ELEVATION: irregular. Gable to left, largely blank, with 1st floor window to right and voussoired oculus in attic; modern shop window at ground to right, with 2 windows flanking to outer left; 2 1st floor windows divided by set-off wallhead stack.

NE ELEVATION: door with 1st floor window above.

Variety of glazing patterns in sash and case windows, plate glass lower sashes and small-pane upper sashes to principal SW elevation. Corniced stacks. Ashlar coped skews. Westmoreland slates with terracotta ridge tiles to SW.

Statement of Special Interest

Singled out from the several properties built by the East Lothian Co-operative Society in Tranent for its prominent position, decorative details, and as a good example of the building brought to the burgh by this major employer.
