Description
W H Lynn, Belfast, architect; James Young, Glasgow sculptor
1879-82. Mixed classical style, with temple fronts to
east and north, campanile and secondary tower. Basement
/ground floor of channelled ashlar. 1st floor articulated
by Ionic pilasters with round-headed windows or straight
-headed with semi-circular tympana except to centres of
east, north, and west fronts. East elevation; symmetrical
with pedimented hexastyle Corinthian open portico between
curved wings ending in single bays. All on basement with
square piers under portico, and straight headed, voussoired
windows at sides.
Asymmetrical north elevation with 5 bays to left, 3 bays
to right, and projecting 3-bay pedimented block supported
by giant coupled Ionic pillars at sides and engaged columns
between, all on pedestals. Virtually symmetrical west
elevation with 5 flanking 5 bay centrepiece, comprised of
plain outer bays forming bases for campanile and tower
pilastered bays. As at principal floor 3 inner bays with
engaged Ionic columns, fronted by cantilevered balustraded
balcony; above 3 pilastered blind bays with carved panels
with northern tall campanile with elaborately carved clock
stage, octagonal bell-stair above crowned with facetted,
tall fishscale stone slated cap. Lower tower with pilastered
and arcaded upper stage and curved pyramidal cap.
South elevation; 6-5-2 pilastered bays, stepped forward
in blocks to west at right. Slate roof with many stacks.
Fine interior hall with organ and rear gallery and glazed
loggia.
