Description

John White, architect; 1754-6 Church, 1770 steeple. Renovated

1876-7 by Rennison and Scott, architects. Rectangular plan,

ashlar with rusticated quoins. South elevation: 5-stage

steeple, rusticated round-headed surround to door. Venetian

window with blind sidelights; 2nd stage with angle pilasters,

blind round-headed window; 3rd with clock in each face

flanked by pilasters supporting open pediment; corbelled

balustrade over 4th stage set back, Venetian windows with

blind sidelights, and corbelled balustrade over; 5th stage

octagonal with round-headed openings in each facet and

facetted spire decorated with roundels. Flanking bays have

segmental ground floor windows, gallery with inner oculi and round-headed outer windows. North elevation 6-bay with

central pilastered and pedimented doorpiece, 2 doors in end

bays, windows detailed as on south front. 5-bay east and west

elevations with central segmentally-headed doors and

round-headed windows to ground and galleries. Eaves cornice,

piended slate roof, platformed at centre.

Interior: galleried to 3 sides with panelled fronts supported

by cast iron colonettes. Organ set under tower recess framed

by arch and coupled Ionic columns. Heavily moulded coved

ceiling with large central boss. 2 stained glass windows by

Ballantine and Sons, Edinburgh and 2 earlier 20th century

windows.

Statement of Special Interest

Ecclesiastical building in use as such. Cost including site was $1558.12.10d. Renovation c. $6,000 and included damp proofing of the lower walls, new cast-iron pillars to support the gallery, new gallery front, complete reseating and a new pulpit, hot water heating, new ornamental seating, lathing and plastering all walls and new north entrance. The windows by Ballantyne and Son of Edinburgh are those flanking the pulpit.

Historic Environment Scotland is responsible for designating sites and places at the national level. These designations are Scheduled monuments, Listed buildings, Inventory of gardens and designed landscapes and Inventory of historic battlefields.

We make recommendations to the Scottish Government about historic marine protected areas, and the Scottish Ministers decide whether to designate.

We list buildings which are found to be of special architectural or historic interest using the selection guidance published in Designation Policy and Selection Guidance (2019)

Listed building records provide an indication of the special architectural or historic interest of the listed building which has been identified by its statutory address. The description and additional information provided are supplementary and have no legal weight.
