Description
1590, Steeple bears date 1496, and parts may survive from
earlier Tolbooth. Renovated 1840. 3 storeys with steeple at
SW corner, irregular fenestration. Quarter turn forestair
on E gable leads to later, flat-roofed, square enclosed
porch giving access to 1st floor. Corbelled parapet above
1st floor with bartizan at SE corner and machicolation
above forestair shared with Town House. Square tower
slightly advanced with 3 floors below corbelled parapet,
and quoins. Arched doorway at ground floor, 1st floor
window has heavy hoodmould extending over width of tower.
Tower rubble above parapet broached to octagonal above
clock dials and E & W faces dated 1883 a and 1496, below wide modillioned cornice, diagonally set tiered octagonal slated
spire with ogee top and weather cock. S elevation of main
part of building has on ground floor, a small door,
wide square-headed pend and 4 small windows, 3 small windows
1st floor, 5 smaller windows with raised margins above
parapet. 3 chimney stacks, 1 projecting from E gabled and
flanked by small windows. Ashlar, rubble above parapet,
slate roof. Interior: all 3 floors barrel-vaulted, including
prison cells and old Council Chamber on 1st floor.
