Description

Late 19th century. 2-storey and attic, terraced 7-bay colony-style tenement on corner site, W facade slightly curved at N end. Sandstone ashlar to front and sides, squared and snecked to rear. Base course, 1st floor cill band course, eaves band course, raised quoins.

W (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: symmetrical, bays arranged 3-1-3, windows with corniced heads at ground, segmental-arched lugged heads at 1st floor. Bay to centre; keystoned, segmental-arched pend entrance at ground, window centred above at 1st floor. Similar 3-bay houses flanking; central corniced and consoled doorpiece, 6-panel door, rectangular fanlight, window centred above, bays flanking with canted dormers above.

N ELEVATION: blank gable end with bowed link quadrant wing of 3-7 Melville Gardens adjoining.

S ELEVATION: 2-bay gable end, windows at ground and 1st floors, stone mullioned bipartite in gablehead, plain margins.

E ELEVATION: irregular fenestration at ground and 1st floors. 1 doorway and 2 flanking windows to left of pend entrance, 3 windows and doorway to right of pend entrance. Stone flight with cast-iron balusters to left leading to 1st floor entrance, window to right, canted dormer above, later piended dormer to left. Curved stone flight with decorative cast-iron railings to right leading to 2 1st floor entrances, 2 windows to left and right, canted dormers above.

4-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roof, stone skews, ashlar ridge stack and gablehead stack to N, brick gablehead stack to S. Cast-iron finials to dormers, cast-iron cornice guttering to front.

Statement of Special Interest

Though giving the appearance of two 3-bay houses, the building is actually divded into 1st floor flats with access to these being from the rear.
