Description

Mid 18th century with mid and later 19th century additions to N. 3-storey asymmetrical tenement now licensed premises. Cream sandstone rubble with squared and coursed sandstone additions, rendered and painted at ground and 1st floor. Fascia at ground, string course to 1st floor, architraved windows to 2nd floor to later additions.

N (ENTRANCE) ELEVATIONS: original block recessed to left; 2 bays; regularly fenestrated. Pend to 63 with boarded door to outer left.

Later advanced block: single storey flat-roofed wing abutting original block to left with wide door and window. Full-height 4-bay addition advanced to right. 4 windows at ground and 1st floor (2 blinded) including plaque to Dr David Waldie to outer left; 3 asymmetrical bays to 2nd floor with 2 taller bays breaking eaves to right with 2 windows and piended roof, smaller window to outer left.

S (REAR) ELEVATION: 2-storey wing projecting to right; cream rubble with modern piended tiled roof, door with timber forestair.

Mostly 12-pane sash and case windows or sash and case pivot. Grey slate roof, piended to additions.

INTERIOR: remains of upper part of stone round-arched doorpiece of 16th date set into wall of lounge.

Statement of Special Interest

Dr David Waldie's laboratory where he conducted experiments into anaesthetics was located in number 67. The plaque modelled by R Hope Pinker in 1913, briefly tells the story of Waldei's achievements.
