Description

Early 18th century, substantially remodelled late 18th century; altered circa 1900 and converted to one house 1990s. 3-storey, 5-bay, rectangular-plan merchant's house. Harled with stone margins. Timber-architraved doorway with pulvinated frieze and cornice (possibly 20th century construction in 18th century style).

SE (WEST QUALITY STREET) ELEVATION: architraved doorpiece with deep-set timber door in bay to right of centre, 2 windows to right and bipartite window to left, 3 further windows beyond to left (all ground floor windows small); 1st and 2nd floor each with 5 regularly disposed windows.

NW (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: centre bay with wallhead gable (probably 1790's) and advanced piend-roofed porch (circa 1900) with decorative-astragalled, part-glazed timber door, window above and blinded window in gablehead. Asymmetrical fenestration to flanking bays, with 2nd floor windows breaking eaves into dormerheads (circa 1900).

Mainly 12-pane glazing pattern, all in timber sash and case windows. Pantiles with slate eaves easing course. Harled stacks with cans and thackstanes; ashlar-coped skews.

INTERIOR: some decorative plasterwork cornicing and roses; stone dog-leg stair. Principal rooms to 1st floor front with fine wood and composition fireplaces in Adam style; plainer mantel shelf with pulvinated frieze and Delft tile slips of different sports; decorative cast-iron fireplace complete with fire basket.

OUTBUILDING: single storey, piended and slated rubble outbuilding adjoining house to SW and forming part of boundary wall to SE.

BOUNDARY WALLS, GATEPIERS AND GATES: coped rubble boundary walls with stugged ashlar quadrants and pyramidal-coped square-section gatepiers.

Statement of Special Interest

Formerly listed as 11 West Quality Street. For most of its history this building has been occupied by successive proprietors of a family firm of architectural joiners.
