Description

Bell of Glasgow, 1889. Red sandstone late Medieval square shaft of clustered columns with carved cushion capital; surmounted by rampant unicorn bearing shield with town crest, standing on octagonal pier with moulded crenellations. Base with alternating bronze plaques and profile busts of Queen Victoria in ogee arches. Pedestal of polished pink granite 4-cornered pool with cups on quarter engaged stump columns at each corner and concave links. Similar square plinth with chamfered corners. Ornate wrought iron fire-baskets and brackets below capital of shaft.

Statement of Special Interest

The Building News pithily remarked in 1889 that an ornamental pillar-lamp and fountain are about to be erected ... as a tardily realised memorial of the Jubilee'. The fountain was finally inaugurated on the 24th May 1890. Bell of Glasgow is probably George Bell Jnr.

Very elaborate wrought-iron bracketed torch holders to each face.
