Description

1953. 3-storey, near-symmetrical, L-plan local authority tenement blocks on corner of King Street West and James Street. Concrete blocks. Base course; cill course to 2nd floor windows.

NE NO 51 (CORNER KING STREET AND JAMES STREET) ELEVATION: block at corner with gabled entrance/stair bay set-back on a diagonal line as link block to 2, 3 bay advanced piend-roofed blocks at right angles. Semi-circular-arched doorway to centre, narrow recessed panel above containing small stair window at 1st floor and taller stair window above with date stone between. Advanced bays flanking with window at ground, 1st and 2nd floors. Wallhead stack to right of gable. Return to right onto Princes Street; window at ground and 1st floor to left; tripartite window with timber mullions at ground and 1st floor to right. 3 symmetrically disposed windows to 2nd floor. Window at ground, 1st and 2nd floors on return to right in re-entrant angle. Return to James Street; same arrangement as Princes Street elevation.

N NOS 53, 55 (PRINCESS STREET) ELEVATION: 2, 7-bay near symmetrical blocks slightly set-back and ajoining No 51 to left). 6 windows at ground, 1st and 2nd floor to centre, including gabled dormerhead windows at 2nd bay to right and left. Gabled entrance/stair bays detailed as No 51 flanking. 3 windows at ground, 1st and 2nd floors to outer left including gabled dormerhead window to centre. 3 bays to outer right detailed similarly but with 2-storey canted window crossing bays to right.

E NO 53 (JAMES STREET) ELEVATION: adjoining No 51 by single storey semi-circular-headed archway). Symmetical 7-bay block detailed as those to N with canted windows crossing outer bays to 1st floor. S return; wallhead stack to centre, window at ground, 1st and 2nd floor to outer right and left.

Mostly 12-pane sash and case windows. Green slate roof, red ridge tiles, tall coped stacks.

Statement of Special Interest

Late date for tenement of this style, but good town planning design. Category changed from B to C(S) in May 2008.
