Description

A N Paterson, 1915. 4-storey Glasgow-style corner tenement block with bank at ground floor, 2-storey to Bath Street. Red sandstone, coursed, squared and stugged with polished ashlar dressings and ground floor; harled rear and side. Base course; keystoned round- and segmental-arched openings at ground floor; stepped band course above ground floor; canted bays with stylised Gibbsian surrounds at 1st and 2nd floor, at 3rd floor windows framed by engaged columns; eaves cornice; overhanging eaves with exposed rafters.

NE (KEMPOCK PLACE) ELEVATION WITH CORNER: 4-bay including corner bay. Doorway to bank in chamfered corner to left with decorative ironwork fanlight, 2-leaf door and (now blank) panel to lintel. 3-storey 4-light canted corner oriel window above left rising on 3 stylised scrolled corbels, dentilled cornice above 2nd floor windows. Bay to left of centre with stepped corbel table with wallhead stack rising from 1st floor. Bay to right of centre with corbelled balcony to 3rd floor window. Outer right bay with 3-storey canted oriel window

SE (BATH STREET) ELEVATION: 5 4-storey bays on falling ground. Centre bay with 3-storey canted oriel window corbelled from 1st floor. Bay to right of centre blank with 3rd floor balcony as above. Outer right bay with corbel table and wallhead stack as above. Bay to left of centre with segmental-arched opening at ground floor and small windows off-centre above. Bay to outer left with corniced doorway framed by

corbelled shafts, windows above, breaking eaves above 3rd floor window in semi-circular gablehead.

2-bay 2-storey wing: to outer left; segmental-arched openings with narrow timber shopfronts and recessed doorways; bipartite windows above; gable to left bay; balustraded parapet to right.

NW (REAR) ELEVATION: harled with semi-circular stair tower; 2 wallhead stacks. Small-pane timber sash and case windows with radial fanlights.

Catslide slate roof; 4 wallhead stacks, those flanking entrnace bay with angle pilasters.

INTERIOR: banking hall with timber panelling and decorative plaster ceiling.

Statement of Special Interest

One of few buildings constructed during the War, when commissions tailed off significantly.
