Description
Frank Burnet and Boston, 1898-1902 with sculpture by Ernest
Gillick. Free classical. 5-storey, double attic and basement
commercial building, basement rising to full ground floor at
Renfield Street, 10 x 6 bays. Polished red ashlar, channelled
strips at ground floor. Plinth forming ground floor cill
band. Sash and case windows, plate glass. Blocks around
windows at 1st and 4th floor. Ground floor partly altered
especially to Renfield Street. Segmentally scrolled
pedimented entrance with sculpted tympanum at No 69 Renfield
Street. Columned doorpiece with segmental pediment at 57 West
Regent Street.
CORNER BAY: full-height canted bay corbelled out on sculpted
brackets supported on columns with figure sculpture in outer
bays. Sculpted frieze at 1st floor, simple pilastered
mullions 2nd and 4th floor. Tower breaking through roof line
with cornice supported on columns and blocked oval oculus in
each bay. Polygonal bell-cast roof with colonnaded lantern.
ELEVATION TO WEST REGENT STREET: full-height canted bay 5th
bay from E; further canted bay above 1st floor in 3rd bay and
over 6-light ground floor window. Balcony at 1st floor over
entrance, aedicule windows at 2nd floor over and in W bay.
Segmentally pedimented windows at 3rd and 5th bays at 3rd
floor. Modillion cornice. Aedicules as dormers and set in
gables with 2 and 3-light pedimented windows; elaborate
relief sculpture, finials, balustrades. Axial stacks.
ELEVATION TO RENFIELD STREET: continuing detailing of West
Regent Street elevation. Canted bays, corbelled out with
balustraded balconies in 1st, 2nd and 6th bays from S. S
corner turret corbelled out with sculpted stops at 4th floor. Balustraded parapet. Single gable with segmental aediculed
window, sculpted finial.
