Description
George S Kenneth, 1899. 7-storey warehouse, 4 irregular
bays, offices and shops with classical details. Opening
to Springfield Court (now demolished) to S. Polished
granite shop front at ground, with cornice and entrances
left of centre and to outer right; 2-leaf panelled
doors. Red sandstone ashlar above ground. Paired windows
at centre, tripartite outer bays, that to left canted at
corner. Simplified Gibbsian blocks to 1st floor windows;
balustraded balcony across 2nd floor. Pilastered
mullions to tripartites at 3rd and 6th floors, with
attached columns to those of 4th and 5th floors, and to
centre windows of 5th floors; boldly corbelled cills to
3rd floor tripartites. Modillion cornice to 4th floor
and consoled main cornice with parapet, and urn
finialled dies. Carved detail below cills of 4th floor
paired windows and billet moulded cills to 6th floor
windows, above swagged ornament. Armorials at centre to
2nd and 3rd floors, one heraldic and the other
initialled. Swan-neck pediment to centre light of canted
bay at parapet.
Return elevation with 2 bays of paired windows; chamfered
angle to W, with door at ground; currently under
alteration to left (1988).
Rear elevation in brick, with stepped and paired stair
windows at centre with metal fire escape.
