Description

Alexander Thomson, architect; 1869. Long Grecian terrace of houses, 52 bays arranged 6-8-30-8-6. 2-storey terrace with 3-storey, 8-bay intermediate pavilions; attic and basement. Polished ashlar, droved at basement, stonecleaned. Whole terrace built on raised platform above level of Great Western Road, with complex of terraces and steps to ground level. 3 bays per house at end pavilions. At 3-storey range, 4 bays per house; at central 2-storey range, 6 bays per house. Steps oversailing basement to fluted ionic porches; at 2-storey ranges with paired columns; at 3-storey pavilions 4-bay columned porch fronts 2 doors and 2 central windows. Recessed doorpieces with wide glazed side lights flanking vestibule door and glazed fanlights. At 3-storey pavilions, flanking sidelights have pilastered reveals. Double-leaf panelled storm doors. Vestibule doors with glazed panel- often acid etched eg No 9 or leaded eg No 3. Sash windows, plate glass glazing. Continuous moulded strings over ground and at 1st floor cills. Incised frieze and moulded band course at 2nd floor cills. Moulded eaves course. Carved modillions support cornice with antifixae. Axial stacks with decorative cans. Polished ashlar symmetrical flanks (Nos 1A and 19 Westbourne Gardens), rectangular projecting windows to outer bays pilastered at 1st. Range of wallhead stacks treated as pilastrade. Polished ashlar rear to No 1, channelled to 2nd floor level. At 1st floor, to left, single light leaded, coloured glass window. To right, circular tower rises to 3 floors conical roof and spike finial. Otherwise rear elevations droved ashlar with occasional bay windows. Whole terrace on raised podium with stugged ashlar retaining walls surmounted by cast-iron railings (to Thomson's design) access by flights of steps and ramps to E and W; carriage entrance from Great Western Road.
