Description

Circa 1840. 2-storey and basement, 3-bay rectangular-plan house forming part of terrace. Polished yellow sandstone; rendered and painted at ground floor; some plastic repairs to 1st floor; harled E elevation; random rubble to S. Projecting base and string course; continuous blocking course; projecting cills to 1st and 2nd floor windows. Long and short surrounds to rear windows; projecting cills; stugged voussoirs to segmental arch at ground.

N (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: recessed 2-leaf replacement door to right of centre; plate glass inserts to both sides; single windows in bays to centre and outer left. Regular fenestration to 1st floor.

BASEMENT: access via exterior stairs from street; single window in central bay; entrance in bay to outer right.

S (REAR) ELEVATION: bipartite window set within segmental arch in central bay at ground; single windows to 1st floor in bays to left and right.

Replacement windows to entrance elevation at ground; 2-pane timber sash and case window to 1st floor in bay to outer left. 12-pane timber sash and case windows in bays to centre and outer right and in both bays to 1st floor at rear. 12-pane replacement casements to segmental opening. Grey slate roof in diminishing courses; stone skews. Rendered gablehead stack to E with projecting cornice and circular cans.

INTERIOR: not seen 1996.

IRON RAILINGS AND BOUNDARY WALLS: coped bull-faced rubble wall to N; bare rubble wall to E. Original iron railings with fleur-de-lys detailing; stone stairs to basement. Random rubble wall to rear along E boundary.

Statement of Special Interest

The harled walkway leading to Andrew Wood Court overlaps the E

boundary of this building (clearly visible from the S). Similarity with the adjacent Nos 43-47 (especially rear elevations) suggests a similar date of construction whilst the rear arch suggests the building may originally have been a carriage-house. Previously listed as 116 - 117 Main Street, Newhaven.
