Summary

Description

Circa 1820, with later alterations (see Notes). Plain classical tenement block; 4 stories and basement, 3 bays to Lauriston Place, 4 to Archibald Place, with recessed quadrant bay to corner. Polished ashlar to ground floor, channelled to Archibald Place and corner bay, droved ashlar above and to basement. Band course between basement and ground and between ground and 1st floors; cill courses to 1st 2nd and 3rd floors; dentilled eaves cornice. Moulded architraves to windows at 1st floor.

N (LAURISTON PLACE) ELEVATION: timber panelled door with umbrella fanlight in round-headed opening; 3 round-headed windows to left, 1 to right at ground (see Notes). Flat-headed blind opening to ground on quadrant corner (see Notes); corniced and consoled window at 1st floor. 3 depressed-arched windows to basement.

W (ARCHIBALD PLACE) ELEVATION: timber panelled door with sunburst fanlight in flat-headed opening to outer right bay. Corniced windows to 1st floor.

12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. Grey slates. Corniced stacks with circular cans.

BOUNDARY WALL AND RAILINGS: spear-headed cast-iron railings to basement area and steps, mounted on low stone coped boundary wall.

Statement of Special Interest

B group comprises Nos 21-37 Lauriston Place, 1-3 Lauriston Terrace and 1-11 Archibald Place, which were restored (including removal of shops) in 1992 by the Lister Housing Co-operative, and opened by Ronnie Browne, 6th November 1992. Patrick Wilson, architect, is mentioned in Sasines in connection with plans for Archibald Place. It is not clear, however, whether these are for the present No 37 Lauriston Place, or for Archibald place itself. According to the 1985 list description, the ground floor to Lauriston Place had 2 round-headed windows and 2 doors, with a modern canopy above, and a round-headed window to the quadrant angle. An earlier photo (NMRS), however, shows the present arrangement, but with a door in the penultimate bay to left, the present door to Lauriston Place a window, and a flat-headed opening to a door on the quadrant angle.

If part of a building is not listed, it will say that it is excluded in the statutory address and in the statement of special interest in the listed building record. The statement will use the word 'excluding' and quote the relevant section of the 1997 Act. Some earlier listed building records may use the word 'excluding', but if the Act is not quoted, the record has not been revised to reflect subsequent legislation.

Listed building consent is required for changes to a listed building which affect its character as a building of special architectural or historic interest. The relevant planning authority is the point of contact for applications for listed building consent.
