Description

Probably 16th century on earlier site and incorporating

earlier fabric. Roofless rectangular church with W gable

almost intact with shallow pointed-headed window; slightly

off-centre S aisle rebuilt in 1764, roofed and closed as

burial vault. Red rubble, tooled red sandstone and tooled

granite dressings.

W end of nave partitioned as burial enclosure; round-headed

arch with blocked imposts between nave and S aisle.

Round-headed recessed mural tomb dated 1559 in N wall. Other

early mural memorials and tombs. Small octagonal font.

BURIAL GROUND: rubble walled burial ground containing 18th

and 19th century and subsequent tombstones. Pair simple

gatepiers with shallow pyramidal caps closed by pair 1874

cast-iron carriage gates.

Statement of Special Interest

Church superseded in 1818 when the present parish church was

built in New Aberdour. Mural tomb dated 1559 erected to (?)

George Baird of Auchmeddon. 2 Baird tombstones dated 1440 and

1453 also set in interior church walls.

Church bellcote said to have been erected in 1771 and reused

on present parish church, New Aberdour, built in 1818.

Bellcote possibly replaced a stumpy spire (though no mural

base survives) or even a free standing belfry.

S aisle closed as burial vault; tablet above entrance

inscribed 'This sepulchre was enclosed by Chas. Leslie, MP

Fraserburgh MDCCCXIX'. Church and former manse separated by

burial ground wall. Scheduled Ancient Monument No 6155.

Scheduled Area 29 November 2004.

Historic Environment Scotland is responsible for designating sites and places at the national level. These designations are Scheduled monuments, Listed buildings, Inventory of gardens and designed landscapes and Inventory of historic battlefields.
