Description

Alexander McCulloch, dated 1878. Rectangular-plan, aisleless former church with Gothic facade. Painted stugged coursers to front, rubble to sides and rear, ashlar dressings, grey slate roof. Base course to front elevation, stepped cill course to 1st floor level; buttresses flanking wide central bay with large octagonal finials and spirelets, buttresses to angles with pyramidal-capped square-section finials, 3-light pointed-arch 1st floor windows, lancets, square-headed windows and oculi, cusped 3-light lancets to sides; ashlar-coped skews with finial to front.

FRONT ELEVATION: 2-leaf partly diagonally-boarded doors to centre, moulded pointed-arch doorcase with stiff-leaf capitalled nookshafts, hoodmould, fanlight with trefoil flanked by 2 oculi interwoven with sculpted vine motif, all within slightly advanced doorpiece with gablet superimposed over parapet flanked by single lancets; large pointed-arch panel to 1st floor, tall cusped lancet to centre flanked by buttresses and 3-light windows with rose window above; staircase bays to left and right each with bipartite, lancet and oculus, name panel over bipartite

to left, date panel to right.

LEFT RETURN ELEVATION: three 3-light lancets.

RIGHT RETURN ELEVATION: five 3-light lancets.

INTERIOR: hall to ground floor; church above with collar roof, panelled chancel area with organ gallery and marble baptismal pool; various wall-mounted memorials.

Statement of Special Interest

An ecclesiastical building no longer in use as such although in the ownership of the Baptist Church and used by the Ward Road Baptist Church nearby, also listed. A memorial in the church to Sir Charles Barrie of Airlie Park, Broughty Ferry, records him as the donor of the church and manse.
