Description

Later 18th century, with later additions to E, forming 2-storey L-plan end house in irregular terrace (2 or 3 former houses combined). Random rubble, harl pointed; E gable harled, N elevation harled and painted. Painted margins.

W ELEVATION: corniced and pilastered ashlar doorpiece to left of centre, flush panelled door and fanlight with bordered glazing pattern. Window at ground and 1st floors in bay to left. Window at 1st floor to right. Wall-mounted 2-face sundial, inscribed "17 WC 59" to SW angle at 1st floor cill level.

S (NORTH ESK) ELEVATION: mutual gable to W with No 4 Bridgend (see separate listing). Window at ground and 1st floors, irregularly disposed. Iron ventilator grille at ground floor.

S (ADVANCED) ELEVATION: gabled, 2-bay wing to left; later 2-storey, single bay lean-to addition with common eaves line andjoined to right. Regulary disposed fenestration, lower in bay to right.

E ELEVATION: lean-to early 19th century (?) addition to left, comprised of door and flanking window to right, large stair window at centre and small window at 1st floor under eaves to right. 2-bay harled gable of corner block to right; regularly disposed fenestration of various sizes.

N ELEVATION: 4-bay. Door in bay to left. 2 windows in bays to left of centre at 1st floor, breaking eaves with cat-slide roofs. Harled wall running N adjoined between windows. Rubble buttress in bay to right of centre. Small window at 1st floor in bay to right.

Variety of glazing patterns in predominantly sash and case windows; plate glass to W and S elevations, small-pane to E and N elevations. Coped skews to S and E gableheads. Rubble and brick mutual stack to W, rendered ridge stack to jamb roof, rendered stack to S gablehead, harled stack to E gablehead and rubble wallhead stack to left of lean-to addition. Thackstanes to gablehead stacks. Grey slates. Steeply pitched roofs to original houses. Some original rainwater goods.

OUTBUILDING: 2-storey piend-roofed rubble outbuilding to E: wooden lintels to carriage entrance to right and door to left on W elevation; fixed 4-pane window above door.

Statement of Special Interest

B Group with Nos 4, 6, and 8 Bridgend. This building combines with Nos 4, 6 and 8 Bridgend (see separate listings) to form an informal and picturesque grouping of buildings in a conspicuous position. This building is the earliest of the group in date and comprised of 2 or 3 cottages at right angles. The sundial to the SW angle adds particularly to the interest.
