Description

Arthur George Sydney Mitchell, dated 1885. 2-storey and attic, 6-bay, rectangular-plan bank premises. Chlorite slate snecked rubble with contrasting stugged and polished red sandstone ashlar dressings, some raised margins. Part base course. Pedimented doorpiece with Gibbsian surround; pedimented windowheads; 1st floor windows to centre and right with moulded aprons and cills; stone mullions and chamfered arrises.

W (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: centre bays with steps up to 2-leaf panelled timber door at right and single window above, bipartite window to each floor at left and 2 pedimented dormer windows to steeply-pitched roof above. Gabled bay to right with 2 windows to ground and 1st floor, bipartite in gablehead with moulded cill and surmounted by decorative dated pediment. Broad gable to left with large corbelled and canted display window to centre at ground flanked by panelled timber doors (that to right with cash dispenser) with deep multi-pane leaded fanlights, outer pilasters and plain frieze with cornice above. Bipartite to left and single window to right at 1st floor and gablehead, bipartite with semicircular pediment to left at gablehead

N ELEVATION: pedimented door in bay to right of centre with 2 stair windows above, further windows to centre at ground and 1st floor with shaped nepus-type gable above.

E (REAR) ELEVATION: asymmetrically-fenestrated elevation with variety of elements including bipartites, 1st floor jettied bay and piended dormer window to centre; small single storey piended projections to outer bays at ground.

S ELEVATION: largely blank elevation with tall stack to gabled centre bay.

4- and 12-pane glazing patterns with 6-pane upper sashes over 2-pane lower to W all in timber sash and case windows; 3-pane over plate glass pivot windows to ground centre and right at W. Grey slates. Corniced and coped ashlar stacks with full-complement of cans; ashlar-coped skews.

INTERIOR: decorative cornices; panelled shutters. Dog-leg stone staircase with decorative ironwork balusters and timber handrail to 1st and 2nd floor offices with timber fireplaces and decorative tile slips.

Statement of Special Interest

Built for the Commercial Bank and formerly listed as 'National Commercial Bank Building'. Sydney Mitchell was employed by this bank and is responsible for several other branches.
