Description
Circa 1800, absorbing earlier farmhouse and extended in mid
19th century (2-storey factor's residence). Random rubble,
harled at S elevation; squared and snecked red sandstone to
mid 19th century work.
S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: (circa 1800) symmetrical 3-bay;
classical details. Raised quoins. Pilaster and cornice door
surround. Flush panelled door with decorative fanlight. Tall
windows flanking at ground and to each bay at 1st floor,
grouped towards centre. Recessed bay to outer right with 1st
floor window.
N (REAR) ELEVATION: wide stair block projecting at centre
with window to right; advanced (circa 1840) wide extension
to outer right with French windows to left and central
wallhead stack. Irregular and altered openings to recessed
earlier bays to left with piend-roofed outbuildings added to
outer left at ground.
W ELEVATION: mansard gable wall formed by bridging of gable
end of earlier house with gable end of circa 1800 extension
to S. 3 window bays with taller windows at ground to outer
bays. Advanced extension to outer left, with 1st floor
window.
E ELEVATION: 1st floor window to right of circa 1800 gable
wall. Single storey range of estate office abutting at outer
left.
12-pane glazing pattern to sash and case windows; external
double glazing added at W. Gable wallhead stacks, some in
brick. Slate roofs; piended rear extensions.
SUNDIAL: detached stone cubic sundial with copper gnoma to
each vertical face. Circular waisted pedestal and finial.
Sited on square base at centre of ornamental pond at rear of
Factor's House.
RETAINING WALLS: ashlar coped retaining walls to S with
decorative cast-iron urn and arrowhead railings. Simple
timber gates. Higher boundary walls to E, W and N.
