Description

Extensive mill and farm complex including ancillary buildings of

varying dates, primarily late 18th century with later alterations and additions. Mill buildings and granary cartshed to W; farmhouse; implement shed and byre forming courtyard to SE. Whinstone rubble; mill harled; house rendered with sandstone dressings; slate roofs; pantiles to courtyard elevation of implement shed; brick repairs.

HOUSE: 2-storey, 3-bay L-plan.

SE (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: advanced gabled bay with swept eaves to outer left; modern timber and glass porch in re-entrant angle; stairwindow above. Single windows in bay to outer right.

NW (REAR) ELEVATION: single windows to 3 bays.

SW ELEVATION: advanced gabled bay to outer left; windows at ground and 1st floors off-set to right. Single windows in bay to outer right.

NE ELEVATION: single storey pitched roof outbuilding adjoining gable. Small-pane sash and case windows; brick gablehead stacks.

MILL: substantial 2 and 3-storey rectangular-plan mill running NW to SE on falling ground; irregular, asymmetrically disposed openings; some timber lintels and jambs to small windows with timber small-pane glazing surviving; late openings at ground to SW; hoist door left of centre at 1st floor to SW. Site of original waterwheel to NW, now blank elevation with course of lade dried up. Bays to SE elevation 2-storey. Dividing ashlar coped skew and further coped skew to SE gable; piend-roof to NW; rooflights; gabled timber roof ventilator.

INTERIOR: timber columns supporting boarding floor to each level; bagger retained. Door and gablehead to 2nd floor accessed from higher ground to SE.

CARTSHED AND GRANARY: also on falling ground; running NE to SW linked to mill at N angle; later brick lean-to in re-entrant angle, obscuring left bays of NW elevation. 2 cartbays with timber lintels to right with granary openings above, 1 shuttered, 1 louvred. Roof: gabled elevation to NE; ashlar coped gable; piended to SW; rooflights. Blank to rear abutting rising ground.

BYRE, STABLES AND IMPLEMENT SHEDS: single storey blocks grouped in irregular plan to form or enclose courtyard. Implement sheds with carriage opening to SW with timber jambs and lintels. Modern brick piers replacing timber (?) piers. Outer elevations blank, partly blocked by higher ground to S. Rectangular-plan block running NW to SE enclosing court in polygonal block to road side, with small 6-pane windows; doors to S and SW; blank to N and gabled N elevation; piended roof to S; rooflights; swept slate ridge ventilators. Small stable block to NE.

INTERIOR: concrete trevises to byres; whitewashed walls.

Statement of Special Interest

Yetholm Mill was one of two corn mills in the parish (the other was at Duncanhaugh). In 1863, George Whitelaw, farmer, was listed as the occupant (see refs). Listed Category C(S) for vernacular form and prominent position.
