Description
Mid 19th century cottage enlarged in later 19th century to 2-
storey, asymmetrical, rectangular-plan gabled villa. Whinstone
and sandstone rubble with harl pointing and stugged red
sandstone margins. Base course; quoins; projecting eaves,
exposed rafters.
S ELEVATION: 4 asymmetrical bays. Broad gabled bay
advanced at centre, 2 large windows at ground, bipartite at
gablehead; single storey outshot at corner right return. Bay
recessed to outer right, bipartite off-centre to left, gabled
dormerhead. Block recessed to outer left with timber verandah
formed from roof sweeping down in re-entrant and supported on
posts and curved brackets; gabled dormerhead in roof to right of
block; 2 windows symmetrically placed at ground.
W ELEVATION: 3 asymmetrically disposed bays. Broad
gabled bay to outer right, full-height canted windows, blank
plaque at centre between ground and 1st floor. Lower block
recessed to right with canted conservatory on red sandstone
base built in re-entrant angle. Bay to outer left with single storey
lean-to storage block at ground.
N ELEVATION: single storey and attic, broad, gabled kitchen
block with lean-to single storey projection at ground, 3 bays with
coal-shute door to outer right. Entrance at right return, storage
block advanced to outer left with glazed lean-to roofing over
entrance over door and window. Broad, 2-storey, blank gable
recessed to right with single storey lean-to projection to outer
right, boarded door.
E ELEVATION: 4-bay block of main house with single storey
kitchen block to outer right. Broad advanced gable at
penultimate bay to left, door to ground right, 2-leaf, square
window with bolection moulding to left, small step to door,
window at centre of gablehead. Right return of S gable to outer
left. 2 asymmetrically disposed bays of main block to right,
bipartite window at ground left with large window to right; gabled
dormerhead to left, 2 smaller windows to outer right at 1st floor;
tall stack rising to left of dormerhead; slate-hung wall at right
return. Single storey service block to outer right, door to left
with modern tripartite inserted to right.
Plate glass sash and case windows, 6-pane sash and case
window on E elevation, some relacement pivot and swing
windows. Variegated purple, green and grey slate; tall, corniced
wallhead stacks, octagonal cans.
GATEPIERS: paired square piers with recessed plaques at
centre and corniced, pyramidal caps.
BOUNDARY WALL: tall rubble wall with semicircular coping
surrounds house and garden; concave curve between piers.
