Description

Mid 19th century. 2-storey, 3-bay, gabled Jacobean villa with single bay, single storey addition at E. Coursed, polished sandstone ashlar with polished quoins and long and short surrounds. Base course; string course and balustrade with pierced strapwork to each advanced single storey bay; string course and cornice to both floors of 2-storey canted bay; crowstep gables.

S (FRONT) ELEVATION: advanced, single storey bay to centre of 2-storey main block; recessed, shouldered entrance containing timber door and shouldered rectangular fanlight; balustrade forming balcony to window at 1st floor above; gabled dormerhead with flagpole; tripartite window to advanced single storey bay at right; balustrade forming balcony to bipartite window at 1st floor above; large, gabled dormerhead with small square panel; advanced, 2-storey and attic, gabled bay at left, with 2-storey canted bay; 4 lights, 2 to front and 1 to each side, to canted bay, both floors; single window to attic gable; gabled single storey bay at left, with advanced tripartite window at ground; small, square, coped gablehead stack with single can.

2-pane timber sash and case glazing. Grey slate roof; coped, gablehead stacks with original, moulded, octagonal cans; painted cast-iron rainwater goods.

BOUNDARY WALLS: low sandstone boundary wall to street; centred pair of tall, corniced, square-plan gatepiers, surmounted by obelisks; obelisk on boundary wall set to right.

Statement of Special Interest

Notable for crowstepped gables and strapwork balconies. Built under Alexander Black, who died in 1858, as part of the Heriot Trust feus. The obelisk gatepiers continue theme set by Donaldson's Hospital (see separate list description).
